TOKYO selected to host the 12th Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implant and Related Sciences in 2019

15 May 2015 PRESS RELEASES
The Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) is pleased to announce winning the bid for the 12th Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implant and Related Sciences (APSCI 2019). The decision was made during the 10th APSCI held in Beijing, China on April 30 - May 3, 2015. This selection marks the first time the Symposium to be held in Tokyo, and the third time in Japan, following the Symposium in Osaka in 2001 and in Kyoto in 1996. Over 800 doctors and scientists, including 600 delegates from abroad are expected to take part in the Symposium on November 5-8, 2019 to be held in Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo. Prof. T. Yamasoba from the University of Tokyo, commented: “The bid win owes to the continuing scientific contribution of Japanese specialists to the Cochlear Implant (CI) field. Also, we learned a lot from our last bid loss in 2013. This time we put more effort on close communication with our colleagues to earn understanding of the scientific significance of hosting APSCI in Japan.” Japanese doctors have played significant roles in cochlear implant field over the years. The first single channel CI surgery in Asia was performed in 1980 in Tokyo by Prof. Kamio from Nippon Medical School, and the first multichannel cochlear CI surgery in Asia was held in 1985 in Tokyo by Prof. Funasaka from Tokyo Medical University. They enhanced CI techniques in Asia ahead of other regions of the world. Prof. Kaga and Prof. Yamasoba from the University of Tokyo and the presidents of the APSCI 2019 bid committee performed the first MED-EL’s multichannel CI in Asia in 2002. Since the introduction of the CI, more than 10, 000 patients have received CI in Japan, mostly in Tokyo, where 4 main hospitals for CI are located, including the University of Tokyo Hospital. Many research papers and presentations related to CI have been provided by Japan, and most of the important works have been done in Tokyo. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and TCVB contributed to the successful bid by providing support including support letters from the Governor of Tokyo and TCVB Chairman, helping with the bid paper. We will continue providing support to deliver a successful and unforgettable 12th APSCI 2019 in Tokyo. For more information, please contact:
