TOKYO selected to host the 33rd International Congress of Actuaries in 2026

26 Dec 2016 PRESS RELEASES

The Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) is pleased to announce winning the bid for the 33rd International Congress of Actuaries (ICA 2026). The decision was made during the Council Meeting of the International Actuarial Association (IAA)* held in Cape Town, South Africa, in November 2016.

The Congress is held every four years and over 2, 000 actuaries, including 1, 500 foreign actuaries representing 100 countries around the world, are expected to take part in the 33rd Congress that will be held in the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa International Convention Center Pamir in November 2026.

The recognition of Japan's long-standing contribution to the IAA was one of the main factors that helped Tokyo to secure the bid. Under the theme "Tradition, Diversity, Innovation", the Bid Committee proposed to share with the international community the issues Japan is at the forefront of efforts to deal with, including ultra-low interest rates and ultra-aged societies. Furthermore, the Bid Committee itself had the strongest motivation to host the ICA in 2026 due to their 50th anniversary since the ICA was previously held in Tokyo in 1976.

The ICA 2026 is still a decade away, however, in order to ensure steady and continuous preparations, the special emphasis was placed on the cooperation between generations. As a result, the "Next Generation Working Group", consisting of young specialists, was organized and they were involved in the stage of making the final bid proposal. Last but certainly not least factor of securing the bid is the strong support from the related industry organizations, Japanese government, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, global firms and companies. In short, "Team Japan" greatly contributed to the successful winning of the bid.

In addition to the above factors, the assured financial and in-kind supports from Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) and TCVB, as well as their help with bid paper preparation and suggestions on the bidding process based on the rich experience, also helped Tokyo to win the bid.
