Tokyo to Host the 29th Harvard World Model United Nations in 2020
The Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) is delighted to announce that Tokyo has been awarded the winning bid to host the 29th Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN 2020)* on March 16-20, 2020.
WorldMUN 2020 is expected to attract over 2,100 university students, including 2,000 foreign participants from more than 110 countries. These participants will engage in debate and discussion on a variety of significant modern and historical issues while simulating committees of the United Nations, featuring a multitude of member states, international organizations, and related governmental and non-governmental bodies.
The deciding factors for Tokyo winning the bid was the Harvard organizing team’s recognition of Tokyo’s rich and attractive mixture of traditional and modern culture, as the conference is also aiming to raise Tokyo’s reputation as a convention city which can provide a safe, hospitable environment with modern infrastructure to the participants.
This resounding success in the WorldMUN 2020 bid process would never have happened without the strong support and steadfast commitment from the Japan WorldMUN Project formed by students from MUN chapters at different universities all over Japan, its president Ms. Jiaqi Liu, and its members. The TCVB also played a major role, utilizing its considerable experience in this area to help the Tokyo Bid Committee prepare its bid proposal and presentation materials. Promises from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) to provide financial and in-kind support for the convention were also important and significant factors in the decision.
Mr. Anirudh Suresh, Secretary General of the Harvard World Model United Nations Secretariat commented: “We have chosen Tokyo because of the unique venues that present a mix of tradition and modernity and because of the financial and logistical support from the Tokyo government (TCVB) and the host team.”
