On August 20-25, Tokyo was honored to welcome the 10th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2023), held for the first time in Japan at the distinguished and historic Waseda University, attracting around 5,000 participants across formats.

Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) and Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) happily provided generous financial and in-kind support to ensure the congress was efficiently planned and local resources optimized. Tokyo actively promotes cutting-edge technology to increase efficiency and productivity in business events. For ICIAM 2023, TCVB and TMG supported the provision of Telepresence Avatar Robots. The poster session, in particular, was abuzz with these amazing robots equipped with cameras and screens for video chat, allowing online participants to communicate with those onsite as if they were attending the in-person event. Thanks to the utilization of this high technology, ICIAM 2023 participants perfectly enjoyed their discussion, regardless of their chosen format.

In-kind support was also plentiful. TCVB provided a dynamic "Nihon buyo" dance, adding flavor to the opening ceremony. Half-day city tours to famous spots in Tokyo, including Meiji Jingu Shrine, Asakusa, Tokyo Tower, TOKYO SKYTREE®, Hama-rikyu Gardens, and more were offered to overseas delegates. Additionally, Japanese cultural programs included origami (the art of paper folding) and furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloths used to wrap and/or transport goods), both of which are intimately connected to mathematics were available. The various programs created unforgettable experiences for overseas delegates.

Tokyo's core values are "High-tech," "Sustainability," and "Unique Experience." ICIAM 2023 set a prime example of the amazing experiences our city consistently delivers in line with these values, further establishing Tokyo as a world leader in international conferences.
