The 3rd World Opera Forum is Coming to Tokyo

10 Jul 2024 PRESS RELEASES

We are delighted to announce that the 3rd World Opera Forum, an international conference uniting opera organizations from around the world, will be held in Tokyo in 2028 at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

The inaugural Forum hosted by Teatro Real took place in Madrid in 2018, followed by the second in Los Angeles hosted by Opera America in 2024. During the closing ceremony of the World Opera Forum in Los Angeles, New National Theatre, Tokyo announced that they will host the event in 2028 in partnership with Opera Europa, Opera America, and Ópera Latinoamérica. We anticipate a lively gathering, attracting hundreds of participants to Tokyo from over 20 countries to discuss the art form's future.

The decision to host the event in Tokyo underscores our rich artistic scene, with a dedication to both Western and Japanese forms, and will be a valuable opportunity for international delegates to sample Japan's cultural programs.

A financial subsidy and in-kind support from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) and Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TVCB) were also factors in the choice of Tokyo for this prestigious event. The final dates of the Forum will be announced at a later date.
