The Current Situation in Tokyo

31 May 2021 NEWS

Since the decline in the number of confirmed cases remains slow, the Japanese government extended the ongoing COVID-19 state of emergency to June 20; however, it has partially loosened the restrictions.

From June 1, museums and amusement parks which initially needed to close completely, are permitted to open until 8 p.m., in case of holding events -until 9 p.m.; movie theaters are permitted to open until 9.p.m. Shopping malls and department stores may operate until 8 p.m. on weekdays but are requested to stay closed on weekends. Restrictions regarding dining and drinking facilities will remain in effect: restaurants and bars serving alcohol or providing karaoke services remain closed; dining facilities stopping their service of alcohol may remain open until 8 p.m.

Event size is restricted to half the venue capacity and up to 5,000 attendees and must conclude by 9 p.m.
