Tokyo's Newest Bid Win of the 50th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education

26 Jul 2024 PRESS RELEASES

Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) is delighted to announce that Tokyo will host the Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (IGPME) in July 2027.

One of the most significant international conferences in mathematics education, IGPME is devoted to rigorous, systematic research that seeks to understand mathematical thinking, learning, and teaching. This annual Conference has been held twice in Japan, in Tsukuba in 1993 and in Hiroshima in 2000.

In 2027 it will be organized by PME (Psychology of Mathematics Education) in Japan at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center and is expected to attract 600 researchers from more than 30 countries. IGPME will provide participants with exciting opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences on diverse fields of expertise, including cognitive, social, and emotional components of mathematics education.

The deciding factors in winning the bid were Japan's long-standing contributions to the field of mathematics education and the enthusiastic proposal made by PME in Japan, led by Professor (Associate) Kotaro Komatsu and Professor Yoshinori Shimizu of the University of Tsukuba.

TCVB played a significant role in support of PME in Japan's preparation of the bid proposal. A generous subsidy from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) to provide financial and in-kind support for IGPME2027 was also essential in the selection.

The convening of this Conference in Tokyo, the center of academic activities of numerous research-oriented societies, will significantly impact academia in Japan. TMG and TCVB will continue to offer support to deliver a successful IGPME2027 in Tokyo.
